Virtual Pop-ins, Friday 20th March 2020

Virtual Pop-ins

This is me right now: >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Hi! Grab yourself a cup of coffee and let's have a chat!
Pull up a chair.
There you go.
Have a biscuit. No? OK. No problem.

What kind of biscuits do you like best?

We have All Butter Shortbread Fingers (Morrisons), Ginger Nuts - (No comments, please) - McVities Digestives, Fig Rolls ... I'm sure we have some Chocolate Digestives (dark chocolate) somewhere. Who's hidden them?

Ah. There they are! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

It's not quite the same, I know, but we don't have to be alone even if we are on our own and restricted in what we can do. The restrictions placed on our lives in response to the coronavirus outbreak (covid-19) may seem rather draconian but, from the evidence of what has been happening in places like China, South Korea, Italy and Spain, they are very needed.

But you don't want to talk about that. You want to talk about something else. Why not pick up the phone and give someone a call? Or if you have your mobile handy, send someone a text message, or WhatsApp, or Facebook, or whatever these things are called.

Look at these flowers. Aren't they beautiful?

What else is in the news?

Everything's been cancelled, right, left and centre: schools, libraries, what have you. Oh, by the way, if you go to the library today or tomorrow morning, you can borrow up to 48 items to keep you going during the siege. Forty-eight! I couldn't carry them. You'd need an articulated lorry to take them all home.

And anyway is it safe? I mean the books. They might all have coronavirus. How do you know? I've taken to carrying a pack of disinfectant wipes around with me all the time. But think of wiping down 48 books! Crazy. And anyway, does it work? Who knows.

Might be best just to download stuff on Kindle or whatever. Virtual books. It's virtual everything, these days, isn't it? On the other hand, I've got loads of books already. Here's my shelf of "Books I intend to read when I get round to it":

Well, I should have plenty of time now, shouldn't I?

I'm having another coffee, I don't know about you.

The floods! Remember them? Look. I've got some pictures on my phone:

It's one thing after another. Like the Biblical plagues.

(Talking of the Bible. There is a virtual service all ready for Sunday here on the blog.)

And so it goes. Join in the conversation. Make a call. Send a text. You can even join in on Twitter if you want to. Search for Burton Joyce Community Church @bjcc_welcome

Oh. Kettle's boiling. Don't forget your coffee, it's getting cold. Want a top-up?

Coffee Pop-ins

Coffee Pop-ins

Coffee Pop-ins have been cancelled for Friday 20th March

With regret, we have cancelled Coffee Pop-ins for next Friday, March 20th, because of the coronavirus outbreak. These are difficult times.

Meeting together is important but the situation is very serious. The best advice, especially for older folk and people with underlying medical conditions, is to keep away from other people as much as possible. Keep in touch by phone and social media.

Even if your are not concerned about your own health, this is important for the sake of people working in the NHS who are going to have a very tough time

We will keep the situation under review

If you have a problem you think we can help with, get in touch via email* and we'll see what we can do. Don't forget to wash your hands frequently and throroughly!

Thursday mornings at BJCC

Thursday Mornings at BJCC

This autumn we may do something new.

What do you think?
Is it worth a shot?

Thursdays
9.30 am - 12 noon

Prayer & Share …………....  (in the hall)
An opportunity to meet and share, pray & talk, tea & coffee on tap

Sanctuary ………….........  (in the church)
Somewhere to be still or for private prayer (There may be music)

On the first and third Thursday, this would incorporate the regular Prayer + Coffee from 9.30 to 10.30 ish. Generally, what I see as the usual format is to have some sort of group prayer at 9.30 and then an opportunity to read scripture together at about 10.30, using the lectionary readings for the following Sunday.

Otherwise, in the hall, there would be tea and coffee and a chance to chat and the church would also be open as a place to get away from it all and be still.

I'd like to give it a go. We'll see what happens.

Christmas Tree Festival

Christmas Tree Festival @ BJ Community Church

Saturdays & Sundays from December 1st, 4-7pm

Preparations are in full swing for the Christmas Tree Festival in the church next month. A wide range of local organisations are each sponsoring a tree. We will be open for the first public viewing at 4pm on Saturday 1st December, after the school Christmas fair and the village lights switch on. Pop in and have a look.

The trees will also be on view at various other times if you want to pop in: for example, on Friday mornings 10am-12 noon during the Friday coffee morning, on Saturday morning December 15th for the Framework coffee morning and during Sunday services, e.g. on Sunday morning December 23rd 10-12.30.

So far, I understand, seven different groups have signed up with a further five pending. And there will be a Memory Tree and a Village Tree. Should I tell you who all the different groups are? No. I think not. You'll have to wait until the doors open on December 1st - unless of course you are a member of one of the groups!

It's going to be great

News just in from Dinah.

Added to the collection in the Co-op on Saturday morning, together with some very generous donations, this took the total collection for the village to £730 - our highest total ever.

Dinah says:
Thank you to everyone who supported us on Saturday.
 Well done, everyone.

Thank you for your support at the Framework coffee morning! £285!

Homelessness is becoming a major issue and resources are limited

Bible discussion group

Bible discussion group

We enjoyed a lively discussion at this morning's Bible discussion group led by Sheila around a verse in Hebrews chapter 4.
For the word of God is alive and active, sharper than any two-edged sword. It penetrates to the division of soul and spirit, to the joints and marrow, judging the thoughts and attitudes of our hearts.  Hebrews chapter 4 verse 12

The Bible discussion group meets alternate Tuesday mornings at 10 o'clock at the church or in someone's home. See the weekly notices for details. Next time we will be looking at a verse in Paul's letter to the Philippians (chapter 2 verse 16). Come along! We start with tea and coffee and then share our thoughts on the passage beginning and ending with prayer.

Hold firm to the word of life and then I will be able to boast that I did not run the race or labour in vain. Philippians 2, 16
